The Battle For Ukraine's Southern Front

Russian gains around Hulyaipole, Dobropillya, and Stepnohirsk are placing Ukraine’s southern defensive network under mounting pressure.

THE BRIEFING

Here’s what’s happening in geopolitics today.

Today’s briefing moves quickly from the battlefield to the negotiating table, with fresh U.S. airstrikes in Syria, a first-ever naval attack-drone launch in the Middle East, and renewed diplomatic talks between Washington and Moscow over Ukraine.

We also cover the release of new Jeffrey Epstein case files in the U.S. and a strong UN move demanding Rwanda withdraw from eastern Congo while extending its peacekeeping mission.

Today’s deep dive examines the collapse of Ukrainian defenses around Hulyaipole and concurrent Russian advances across the southern front.

THE LAST 24 HOURS IN GEOPOLITICS

1. U.S. launches airstrikes against dozens of Islamic State targets in Syria
The U.S. military launched large-scale airstrikes against more than 70 Islamic State targets across central Syria on Friday, in retaliation for a December 13 ambush near Palmyra that killed two U.S. soldiers and a U.S. civilian interpreter. The strikes, conducted under Operation Hawkeye Strike with fighter jets, attack helicopters and artillery, and supported by Jordanian forces, targeted IS fighters, infrastructure and weapons sites. U.S. officials described the campaign as a forceful response aimed at degrading IS capabilities rather than the start of a wider war, with continued cooperation from the Syrian government against the militant group.

2. U.S. Navy in Middle East employs attack drone at sea for first time
For the first time, the U.S. Navy successfully launched a one-way attack drone from a ship at sea while operating in the Middle East, with the Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS) taking off from the Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Santa Barbara in the Arabian Gulf. LUCAS, part of a newly deployed Task Force Scorpion Strike squadron, can be launched from multiple platforms and marks a significant expansion of naval unmanned operations in a strategic theatre.

3. New Epstein files released by U.S. Justice Department
The U.S. Justice Department began publicly releasing a long-awaited tranche of Jeffrey Epstein-related files on Friday under the recently passed Epstein Files Transparency Act, publishing thousands of documents including photographs, call logs, grand jury testimony and investigative records tied to the late financier’s sex-trafficking cases. Many of the materials are heavily redacted, and officials acknowledged that hundreds of thousands of additional pages will be released in the coming weeks as part of an ongoing review process to protect victim identities and sensitive information.

4. Russian, U.S. officials to meet in Florida for more talks in Ukraine
U.S. and Russian officials are set to meet in Florida this weekend for renewed negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine, with the Russian delegation led by Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev and the U.S. team including diplomat Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner. The talks follow recent discussions in Berlin with Ukrainian and European officials on security guarantees and a U.S.-proposed peace plan, although Moscow has ruled out direct meetings with Ukrainian negotiators during the Florida talks.

5. UN demands Rwanda leave Congo, extends UN peacekeeping mission
The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution demanding that Rwanda withdraw its forces and cease support for the M23 rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) amid a renewed offensive that has destabilised the region and drawn international concern. The same resolution also extended the mandate of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) for another year, maintaining its troop levels and authorising it to support ceasefire implementation and civilian protection.

DAILY DEEP DIVE

Battle Of Hulyaipole

The situation in the Hulyaipole direction continues to deteriorate rapidly as Russian forces consolidate gains and Ukrainian defensive cohesion breaks down across multiple sectors of the city.

Russian units from the Vostok Operational Group, including elements of the 38th and 57th Motorized Rifle Brigades, are advancing from the southeast and are now threatening to sever the Omelnyk–Hulyaipole road, one of the last viable supply and withdrawal routes. With earlier Russian infiltrations along the Zelene–Hulyaipole axis, Ukrainian forces face an increasing risk of operational encirclement.

Inside the city, fighting is concentrated around key intersections and residential zones. In the east, Russian forces have pushed westward toward the city centre, securing remaining housing east of Myru Street and several warehouse complexes. In the south, Russian spearheads have expanded past the cemetery, capturing positions along Kooperatyvna Street and pressing north toward the high-rise district, now the main Ukrainian stronghold. Under sustained air cover, Russian units reached the Vyshneva Street–highway junction and are fighting for access to the nearby high school complex.

In the city centre, Russian forces continue to widen their bridgehead across the Haichur River, securing the hospital complex, a kindergarten, and multiple mid-rise apartment blocks while probing toward the northeastern edge of the high-rise zone.

Ukrainian resistance has been further weakened by the effective destruction of at least one company from the 86th Airmobile Battalion, with additional elements from the 75th and 86th Battalions now trapped following uncoordinated withdrawals of neighbouring units earlier in December.

To stabilise the front and enable withdrawals, Ukrainian command launched counterattacks on

December 17 using elements of the 33rd and 225th Assault Regiments.

Over the past four days, Russian forces have expanded and reinforced their bridgehead west of the Haichur River toward Dobropillya, seizing additional trench lines along Ukraine’s primary defensive belt and further pressuring Ukrainian positions in the sector.

Over the past ten days, Russian forces have pushed east of Stepnohirsk, with fighting ongoing in the central microdistrict. Russian units have also breached sections of Ukraine’s main defensive line south of the solar power plant, maneuvering around it to reach the outskirts of Lukyanivske, where Russian DRG activity has been reported.
