Where Ukraine is Counterattacking And Holding The Line
Recent fighting remains fluid, with Ukraine holding key positions and regaining limited ground even as Russian forces continue pushing along several axes.
THE BRIEFING
Here’s what’s happening in geopolitics today.
It’s been a busy 24 hours in geopolitics. From French soldiers shooting down mystery drones over a nuclear submarine base to a U.S. Coast Guard sniper stopping a narco-boat in the Pacific with Hollywood-level precision.
Tensions flared from the Afghan–Pakistani border to a Trump-led trade huddle at the World Cup draw, while Chechnya’s Ramzan Kadyrov vowed retaliation after a drone strike in Grozny.
Today’s deep dive breaks down the latest frontline shifts, where Ukrainian counterattacks and stabilisation efforts have balanced Russian pressure across key sectors.
THE LAST 24 HOURS IN GEOPOLITICS
1. French soldiers open fire on drones over nuclear submarine base
French marine forces fired on multiple unidentified drones observed over the Île Longue naval base in Brittany on Thursday night, a facility that hosts France’s four nuclear-armed ballistic-missile submarines. French authorities have opened a military investigation into the incident, though it remains unclear whether the drones were destroyed, and no origin or perpetrator has yet been identified. The strike underscores growing concerns across Europe about unauthorised drone activity over sensitive military infrastructure, raising fresh questions about security gaps and potential surveillance operations.

2. Coast Guard helicopter sniper takes out narco-boat in Pacific Ocean
A helicopter sniper from the United States Coast Guard intercepted and disabled a fast-moving narco-boat during a counter-drug patrol in the Eastern Pacific, part of the ongoing Operation Pacific Viper. The interdiction reportedly resulted in the seizure of more than 7.5 million potentially lethal doses of cocaine, a significant haul. U.S. authorities described the operation as a textbook example of coordinated maritime interdiction, combining air- and sea-assets to cut off narcotics trafficking before shipments reach consumer markets.

3. Afghanistan says 4 killed in heavy fire exchanges with Pakistani forces
Afghan and Pakistani forces exchanged heavy gunfire late on Friday along their shared border near the Spin Boldak–Chaman area, with Afghan authorities saying four civilians were killed in the cross-border exchanges. Afghan officials reported the shelling included “light and heavy artillery” that struck homes, while Pakistan accused Afghanistan of “unprovoked firing,” highlighting sharply conflicting claims over who started the violence.

4. Trump talks trade with Canada, Mexico leaders at World Cup draw
Trump met with Mark Carney and Claudia Sheinbaum at the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw in Washington D.C. to discuss trade and the upcoming review of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). The private meeting reportedly lasted about 45 minutes with no staff present, and all three leaders agreed to continue working on trade cooperation despite recent tensions over tariffs and trade policy. The talks came as the three nations prepare for the 2026 formal review of USMCA.

5. Chechen leader Kadyrov promises retaliation after Ukrainian attack
Ramzan Kadyrov, head of Chechnya, has vowed retaliation after a drone strike allegedly carried out by Ukrainian forces damaged a high-rise building in the Chechen capital, Grozny. The strike reportedly caused no casualties, but Kadyrov has warned of a “stern response” within days, promising any counter-strike will target military infrastructure. The incident represents the latest escalation in drone attacks and counter-attacks involving Chechen and Russian forces, increasing the risk of broader reprisal as the war persists.

DAILY DEEP DIVE
Where Ukraine Counterattacks
Context
The past several days have seen notable movement across multiple sectors of the front, with Ukrainian counterattacks and local stabilisation efforts playing a significant role. While Russian forces continue to apply pressure, particularly along the Hulyaipole axis, Ukrainian units have managed to hold key positions and exploit openings where Russian lines appear stretched. The fighting remains fluid and decentralised.
Hulyaipole Sector
In the northwest, Russia followed up its capture of Nove Zaporizhzhya by pushing into the northern part of Dobropillya. Several Russian assault groups advanced westward along pre-established attack corridors, taking new treeline and plantation positions. Further gains along the southern treelines enabled Russian forces to secure the remainder of Dobropillya. This tightening grip on the local terrain has allowed Moscow to broaden the offensive arc against Hulyaipole itself.
To the south, Russian units continued manoeuvres to outflank Hulyaipole from the north, pushing toward Varvarivka from favourable high ground. New Russian positions near the reservoirs now link this effort to the Dobropillya sector, creating a more unified frontage for future pushes.
Inside and around Hulyaipole, fighting has become increasingly urbanised. Russian troops advanced along the Hulyaipole–Velyka Novosilka road, reaching the northeastern edge of the town. They seized a second cluster of agricultural buildings and consolidated along Bochanska and Nabrezhna Streets. Heavy combat continues in the blocks north of the Haichur River. Ukrainian counterattacks have slowed progress but haven’t dislodged Russian footholds. Russia has also entrenched along Krasna and Zarichna Streets in eastern Hulyaipole, signalling its intention to grind forward block by block.
While Ukraine has moved to defending on the western of the river and highway, the fall of Dobropillya is an issue. The town sits on the defensive barriers that we have mentioned thus breaking into Ukraines lines.

Prosyana Direction – A Ukrainian Counterpunch
Amid Russian gains to the south, Ukraine scored a well-timed local success near Prosyana. Ukrainian forces launched a coordinated counterattack, retaking the village of Ivanivka. Advancing along treelines north of the village and a forested gulley to the southwest, Ukrainian troops broke through thinly held Russian positions. The Russian garrison inside Ivanivka was surprisingly small and dispersed, and once Ukrainian forces breached the centre, the remainder collapsed quickly.

Kupiansk Area – Ukrainian Momentum
On the northeastern front, Ukraine continued to claw back territory west of Kupiansk over the past three days. Ukrainian troops pushed through porous Russian lines, advancing along Kharkivska and Lermontova Streets and briefly reaching the Kupiansk-Yuzhny rail station before withdrawing to more defensible positions.
